OGraf, the new HTML graphics standard, is here

Updated: Apr 29

EBU just presented the new HTML graphics standard, OGraf, in an open webinar for a wide professional audience from the broadcast graphics industry. What is it, what does it mean for us and what does it mean for the industry as a whole?

What is OGraf?

OGraf (short for Open Graphics) is meant to simplify the adoption of HTML graphics, specifically for the broadcast industry, by providing an open file format and a set of APIs that can be implemented by software vendors, graphics integrators and other related users. This brings a new level of modularity to HTML graphics, allowing for production pipelines to be built from a growing collection of OGraf compliant systems.

OGraf specification is at the moment in a draft state and v1.0 will be presented at IBC 2025. You can learn more and get involved at ograf.ebu.io

What does OGraf mean for SPX?

SPX Graphics started discussions with EBU at IBC23, almost two years ago, about a potential “HTML graphics definition” that could make the HTML ecosystem more widely adopted. EBU invited graphics professionals from several vendors and broadcasters to form a working group around this topic.

SPX has always been a proponent of bringing openness to broadcast graphics and over the years, we have been working to make HTML Graphics more relevant in the industry. OGraf is an excellent technology and will to grow the industry as a whole and our part in it.

In addition, we are adding a suite of broadcast-related HTML graphics tools and workflows to extend our current SPX Graphics offering - and OGraf will play a part in all of them. To learn more about HTML graphics in broadcast, talk to us today.

What does it mean for you

If you've noticed, HTML graphics have seen a rapid adoption in recent years in professional productions and 2025 is seeming to be the year when it will take off in full force. You are looking into it and so are your competition and peers. You will hear HTML and OGraf mentioned in your meetings; and SPX as a part of the conversation.
