Broadcast graphics in transition
How HTML Covers Almost All Broadcast Graphics Needs

ABSTRACT
One of the many applications of HTML, the markup language of the Web, is graphics. Many graphical elements in TV broadcasts are or can be done with HTML. However, the exact number of HTML-possible graphics in actual TV programming is unclear. In this study, we suggest a way to count which percentage of graphics are or could be made in HTML in broadcasts on five different European TV channels.

The study found that 96.8% of graphics could be HTML, while only 3.2% could not. News broadcasts were the largest category in graphics usage overall. The procedure of this study paves the way for a larger, more in-depth study of broadcast graphics and the prevalence of HTML graphics in TV and other media.
